The magic E

8 Octubre 2007

Silent E (sometimes described by teachers as a “magic E”) is a writing convention in English spelling. When reading, the silent letter e at the end of a word signals a specific pronunciation of the preceding vowel letter, as in the difference between “rid” /ɹɪd/ and “ride” /ɹaɪd/.
